The Barclays: Odds

HARRISON, NY - AUGUST 25: Justin Rose of England on the 2nd hole during the third round of The Barclays, the inaugural event of the new PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup at Westchester Country Club on August 25, 2007 in Harrison, New York. (Photo by M. Ehrmann/Getty Images)As the Barclays is the first of four playoffs for the FedEx Cup competition, it can be expected to draw a field of virtually all the top ranked golfers in the world. It should prove to be fiercely competitive, and there are several golfers who have the pedigree and skill to pull off a win at the Westchester Country Club.

Hot Picks

  • Three time winner and former world number one, Vijay Singh has to be in contention for his fourth victory at the Barclays 2008. Although he has dropped out of the top ten of the Official World Golf Ranking - he is currently at number 11 - he had a reasonable 2007 season. He won two PGA Tour events, the Mercedes Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and one Asian Tour competition, the Kolon-Hana Bank Korea Open.
  • England’s Justin Rose is currently showing pretty good form. The 2007 European Tour Order of Merit winner has shot up the rankings, and is currently at number six. He won the Australian Masters in 2006, had a great showing at the 2007 Masters – finishing in the top five - and went on to win the Volvo Masters. He recently married his long-time girlfriend, so connubial bliss is an added plus to his overall form.
  • Defending champion and world number three, Steve Stricker continues to impress with consistently good form. In 2006 and 2007 he was voted PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year, he finished runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 2007 FedEx Cup playoffs and lost out in a play-off to Daniel Chopra at the 2008 Mercedes Benz Championship. Stricker should have excellent Barclays odds going into this year’s tournament.
  • Ireland’s Padraig Harrington is also showing good form going into 2008. He clinched the Irish Open in 2007, quickly followed by his first major, the coveted Open Championship at Carnoustie. He clinched the title by defeating Spain’s Sergio Garcia in an exciting playoff. He ended the 2007 season as the European Tour Golfer of the Year. He is currently ranked 10th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
  • South Africa’s Ernie Els is the only golfer to have won the Barclays in consecutive years. Can he rediscover the scintillating form he has so enjoyed in the past? Although he has had a drought in wins in recent times, he has remained in the top five of the Official World Golf Ranking. He ended the 2007 season with a victory at the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth, and will hopefully take the good form into the new season, and the Barclays 2008.
  • Then of course there are the Americans at the top of the ranking – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. Any of them, on the day, can pick up the title at Rye, but believe you me the odds aren’t going to be that attractive to the punter!

Now that you’re armed with tips for Barclays odds, you can make the event more interesting by betting on your favourite golfer to take the title. We recommend William Hill for the best *golf betting experience.
