The Barclays: History

(Photo by M. Barclays history includes several name changes:

  • Westchester Classic: 1967 – 1975
  • American Express Westchester Classic: 1976 – 1978
  • Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic: 1979 – 1989
  • Buick Classic: 1990 – 2004
  • Barclays Classic: 2005 - 2007
  • The Barclays: 2007

The latest name change is in line with the newly-found importance of the event. It is the first of four playoffs of the innovative FedEx Cup. Many golfers, however, still refer to the tournament as the Westchester Classic.

Traditionally the event was always held in June of each year, either a week after the elite US Open, in odd-numbered years, or a week before the second of the majors, in even-numbered years. Due to the fact that it is now part of the FedEx Cup, the dates had to be moved to August. The 2008 event will be held from 18 – 24 August.

The 2007 defending champion is current world number three, Steve Stricker. He pulled off an amazing four birdies in the final five holes to lift the title in style. His total score for the tournament was 268, and apart from the $1,260, 000 in prize money, he was also awarded 9,000 FedEx Cup points for his efforts. KJ Choi was runner-up, followed closely by South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini.

Problems

In mid-January 2008, reports in several newspapers in the United States and Canada intimated that the Westchester Country Club would no longer be the venue of the 2008 Barclays. A PGA Tour spokesman has, however, said that a decision had no yet been made and that all reports of a move to a new venue were premature.
