Harrington targets FedEx Cup success
Padriag Harrington is looking to secure his first title of the season when he travels to the FedEx Cup opener, the Barclays Classic, later this week.
The Irishman pushed Tiger Woods all the way in the WGC-Bridgestone Championship and tailed the world number one for three rounds at the PGA Championship a week later before imploding spectacularly in the final round.
Harrington is determined to finish his season on a high, and having founds his swing will be looking to the high-paying events of the FedEx Cup to make his mark on the latter stages of the 2009 golf season.
“I’m going to need to play well in the first two to make sure I’m in the third,” Harrington told the Irish Independent. “But I’m trying to win tournaments. I’d be very happy if I won one of the first three tournaments even if it didn’t get me into the Tour Championship.”
Harrington will need to put in a strong performance at one of the FedEx Cup tournaments if he hopes to avoid missing out on the season-ending HSBC Champions Tournament in China.
“I am very aware that I haven’t yet qualified for the WGC-HSBC Champions and the uncertainty makes me very uncomfortable,” Harrington concluded.
“It is one of the most important tournaments of the year. Currently I would qualify via my world ranking but I would obviously like to win my first title of the season as soon as possible to secure my place as I am determined to qualify.”
